I have been using Muso day in day out for the past 3 years or so. However, I never quite understood how to use the Compilation tag to my benefit. Can someone enlighten me on this possibly very silly question?

It's not used by Muso a great deal as Muso by default collates albums by containing folder - this page in the Wiki page explains:
