Sorting on multiple tags

Just wondering how this works. For example I am importing PERFORMER_SORT as the sort field for PERFORMER and each is stored as a multi-valued FLAC tag. Sometimes Muso seems to have the right sort order and sometimes not. Where there is only one performer tag, it seems to work OK, but that might be coincidence. How does Muso deal with this, does it need a single-valued tag? (The tag order matches - i.e the first PERFORMER tag matches the first PERFORMER_SORT tag).

It will only store sort values for tracks where the number of tags in the sort field matches those in the corresponding value field - eg. if there are two in PERFORMER_SORT it will expect two in PERFORMER too - then it can store them each individually as sort mapping. When it applies them to sort an album I think it takes the first.

Hmm. That's what I thought. That might be the problem sometimes, but generally the number of tags does match. So I investigated further. The Music Library.xml file appears to have the correct entries, but the sorting in the hierarchy view (for performers) does not always seem to get it. This is making diagnosis rather confusing.
For example "Michael Collins (clarinet)" appears in the XML file thus:

but the hierarchy shows him with the M's, not the C's:

He also appears correctly in the Options:

I've tried restarting Muso but no change.
